How It All Began
I’ve always carried a love for creating. As a child, it was drawing. Later, it became crafting. Eventually it grew into photography and even clay sculpture—two passions that I turned into businesses at different points in life.
In high school, I found another spark: debate. That team ignited my love for research and public speaking. Around that same time, poetry found its way into my notebooks, teaching me that words could hold both weight and beauty. In my twenties, journaling became a steady rhythm, and I found myself working for a nonprofit where I wore many hats—fundraising, instructing, teaching, and speaking. That season stretched me. I learned how to research deeply, write clearly, and bring it all to life in front of an audience. And I loved it.
Life, of course, has its own rhythms. Many other jobs would follow—real estate, photography, healthcare—but my heart never wandered too far from the steady beat of creativity: writing, speaking, storytelling. Things do have a way of coming full circle, and now, here in the “dash in between,” I’ve found myself returning to those first loves.
The stories I write today are gathered threads from the first part of that dash, woven into reflections in this latter part. They are lifelines, heartbeats, fragments of a journey I don’t want to leave unwritten. Who knows—maybe even my speaking voice will find its way back.
Time has moved quickly. I have more years behind me than ahead. But I hope these years carry the most weight. I hope the last part of my dash leaves a legacy that lingers after my finite mind joins the infinite.
JLH was born out of that very heartbeat—the rhythm that has pulsed through every chapter of my life. Whether through photographs, lifelines, or words on a page, this space is where I tell the stories that shape me.
Because in the end, we are all just stories.
And I want mine to be a good one.
