When I was little, I was given the nickname Smiley.
I didn’t earn it for perfect teeth or for being the loudest laugh in the room—it came simply because I wore a grin more often than not. Even as a child, I learned early that a smile could change a room, soften a mood, or spark connection.

Today, May 31st, we celebrate National Smile Day—a reminder that something as small as the curve of our lips can leave a mark bigger than words.

The History Behind the Day

National Smile Day was created by Dr. Tim Stirneman and Jim Wojdyla, both from Illinois, to spread a simple truth: smiles are contagious. Launched in 2018, their mission was to dedicate a day to encourage positivity, kindness, and human connection—one smile at a time. The day quickly grew in popularity, resonating with people who understood that, in a world often weighed down by seriousness, a smile is a lifeline.

Sometimes all it takes is a smile and a little encouragement to brighten someone’s day. Woo hoo—you really are doing great!

Why Smiles Matter

A genuine smile is more than muscle movement—it’s chemistry.
